Shiv Sena founded by political cartoonist Bal Thackeray on 19 June 1966 is a Hindu patriotic political organisation in India. The party originally came out of a movement in Mumbai challenging advantageous treatment for Maharashtrians over migrants to the city. The Shiv Sena party has a powerful hold over the Bollywood film industry. It is presently headed by Thackeray's son, Uddhav Thackeray. The Members of Shiv Sena are called Shiv Sainiks.
Although the party is primarily based in Maharashtra, it has tried to expand itself. From solely limiting itself to pro marathi in 1970's the party gradually moved to one advocating a broader Hindu nationalist program, as it coordinated itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party. It is a "Hindu extremist" party and tyrant. The party was an alliance in the National Democratic Alliance cabinet that ruled India between 1998–2004.
